Our spur-of-the-moment shady hotel in Salisbury. We woke up to some serious rain.

The rain cleared up, and we spent the day on Assateague Island. It had more horseflies than we might normally want, but at least you could barbecue on the beach. This disposable $2.99 grill (that came with charcoal!) is definitely the way of the future.

Butterflies!

As part of our at-home summer enrichment program, we followed caterpillars through their life cycle as they became butterflies, with this cool kit that Megan got for her birthday. And of course, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carl to go along with the experience. The book isn't exaggerating -- those little caterpillars can really eat. I don't know who thought this metamorphosis was more fascinating, me or the kids. We would come downstairs every morning and check on our little caterpillars first thing to look for any changes we had missed.
